An Overview Of Pass Plus

MotorwayPass Plus is an additional practical driving course that is aimed at drivers who want to improve their skills and safety whilst driving. The course takes at least 6 hours to complete and can be taken at any time after passing your driving test- however, it is generally more useful to new drivers who have passed within the last year or so.

To take a Pass Plus course, you will need to ensure you have a Pass Plus registered approved driving instructor (also known as an ADI) to give you lessons.

If you successfully complete the course, you may find that you get a discount on your car insurance price.

Booking To Complete Your Pass Plus

It is important to make sure you make a booking with a Pass Plus registered approved driving instructor to complete your Pass Plus. If you are unsure, you can contact the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) who have a register of driving instructors that are registered with Pass Plus. In order to do this, you will need to have the name and ADI number of your chosen driving instructor.

You can contact the DVSA Pass Plus team either over the phone or by email (passplus@dsa.gsi.gov.uk). The hours of operation are Monday to Friday, from 9am until 4pm. Please note this may vary for bank holidays, Christmas and Easter.

How Much Does It Cost To Take Pass Plus?

The fee for completing Pass Plus can change depending on a number of factors, including where you live, your instructor/ driving school and how long it takes for you to complete the training. There are some local councils who can give discounts off the full cost of Pass Plus training as well.

Pass Plus training must last for a minimum of 6 hours and there are 6 modules to cover. These include:

  • Driving in and around your local town
  • Driving in all weather conditions
  • Driving on rural roads
  • Driving at night time
  • Driving on a dual carriageway
  • Driving on the motorway

All of these modules should be undertaken as practical sessions, although it is possible that some may need to be theory based due to local conditions. It is expected that you would spend a minimum of 5.5 hours driving.

Although there won’t be a test to take at the end of the sessions, you will be continually assessed during the course of the exercises. In order to pass, you will need to meet the required standards in all of the modules.

After you have successfully completed your training, you will be sent a Pass Plus certificate. You will need the information supplied on this to input when you are applying for car insurance.

If you need to find out anymore information, you can get in contact with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (also known as the DSVA) Pass Plus team and they will be happy to give you more information. You can reach them on the phone or by emailing them at passplus@dsa.gsi.gov.uk. The service is open Monday to Friday, 9am-4pm.

How Do You Get A Discount On Your Car Insurance Through Pass Plus?

After fully completing you Pass Plus training, you may find that you can get a discount on the amount you have to pay for your car insurance. In order to do this, you will need to have your Pass Plus certificate. You will need to check with your insurer if you are able to get a discount if you completed your practical driving test over a year ago, as this varies by company.

How much discount you get changes depending on the insurance company and it is not a requirement for all companies to give discounts to those who have done Pass Plus. You may be able to save your discount for up to 2 years if you don’t currently have a car, but you will have to clarify this with your insurance company.
